9/11 Reversal Ritual, 2019
The image of the Twin Towers burning on September 11 will forever be etched into the minds of those who witnessed it, most commonly through the medium of television. While we have achieved some distance in terms of time, the event still haunts through the dramatic imagery of the vulnerability of the enormous towers as they are brought down.
In this video I have taken footage of the Twin Towers, slowed it down and reversed it. I wish I could reverse the event. Instead of billowing outwards, the smoke is returning back into the building. This is reminiscent of the antiquated religious and magical ritual of insufflation, where blowing or breathing into something was seen as an act of purification from evil, or filling with good.
To facilitate the exorcism of this traumatic memory, a woman creates a meditative soundtrack that helps to soothe the mental scars and bring about a sense of peace in the face of chaos.
The full version of this piece goes for 35 minutes.
