Il était deux fois..., 2019
Are we reaching a breaking point in the capitalist system that dominates our way of life? In France the gilets jaunes movement is agitating for a reconsideration of the implications of capitalism through often violent and regular demonstrations on the streets of Paris. Simultaneously many right wing movements in France and Europe are arguing for the same cause. This could signal the end of the left-right political dichotomy and reveal a more nuanced struggle against the institution of all-consuming capitalism. In this video work I have taken footage of the gilets jaunes protesting in Paris and paired it with the sound of Coca Cola commercials. This juxtaposition creates an unnerving effect that mirrors the tensions and complexity of the times we live in. No longer can we gloss over the ill effects of capitalism. The bile is spewing to the surface.
